“Thank you”. “Really appreciate it”. “I love you”. “So grateful”.
These are words that communicate appreciation for all the blessings in our life, no matter how small. They are key to happiness and to creating more of what we want.
Practising gratitude is the building block for a happy life and the most rewarding of mindfulness activities.
When we are faced with difficult times, it is easy to overlook the little things we would normally appreciate, and yet paradoxically, it is even more important to practice gratitude during the times we may feel low.
Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can give you feelings of joy, contentment, and peace, as well as the positive impact for those who are recipients of your gratitude. It is almost impossible to feel any negative emotion when you are feeling grateful. Gratitude promotes and strengthens human connections, leading to better relationships and a more optimistic view on life. That’s why it is so effective in boosting our mood, emotional and mental health.
Think about it – if you paused and remind yourself of all the people, experiences, and things that you are grateful for, at a time when you are feeling disappointed or upset, how would it make you feel? Would it not make you feel better, and lift your spirits? How much more can you give and love if you are feeling safe, loved, and supported? How would it affect the people around you if you are feeling happy, positive, and secure?
A conscious gratitude practice helps us to maintain that positive spirit and stay in a high vibrational frequency even when we are experiencing challenging times, to get through those times with the right attitude and mindset.
Here are a few easy and effective ways of practising gratitude daily (tried and tested by me) -
1. Maintain a gratitude journal - write in it regularly, with things/experiences/people you are deeply grateful for
2. Acknowledge and express your appreciation for things your loved ones do for you – every time!
3. Express your love to all your loved ones openly, freely, and frequently.
4. Don’t take anything and anyone for granted; especially people you love and those who love you.
5. Reach out to someone you haven’t connected in a while with a positive and loving message.
6. Smile at strangers and greet them warmly
7. Make a list of your strengths, gifts, and talents
8. As often as you can, perform a random act of kindness
9. No matter what, treat others with compassion, respect, and kindness
10. Give thanks at the end of the day and first thing in the morning
These are only a few suggestions. Create your own practice. The important thing is to have a practice because it helps us lead a healthy, positive life and consistently be the best version of ourselves. Try it and reap the innumerable benefits.
With this post across the week, I am sending a prayer of gratitude to the universe for all the wonderful blessings in my life.
